The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that immigration authorities will review applicants’ “anti-American” views, including opinions expressed on social media, when deciding on residency and other immigration benefits.

According to French news agency AFP, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) stated that the monitoring of social media activity is being expanded to ensure that individuals who harbor or promote anti-American sentiments are not granted entry or immigration benefits.

USCIS spokesperson Matthew Tragesser said in a statement, “The benefits of America should not be granted to those who hate this country and promote anti-American ideologies.”

He clarified that immigration benefits, including permission to live and work in the United States, are not rights but privileges.

The Immigration and Nationality Act, introduced in 1952, defines anti-American ideologies, which at the time were primarily associated with communism.

The report added that the Trump administration has already taken steps to revoke or deny visas for individuals perceived to oppose U.S. foreign policy, particularly on issues related to Israel.
