The academic and political atmosphere of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is in mourning today. Renowned religious scholar and Sheikh-ul-Hadith, Maulana Muhammad Idris from the Trangaizai area of District Charsadda, has been martyred after unknown assailants opened fire on him.
His martyrdom is not only a major shock for his thousands of students and followers but is also being seen as the end of an important academic and political era.
Academic legacy and family background:
Maulana Muhammad Idris was born in 1961 into a scholarly family in Charsadda. He belonged to a lineage known for its continuous religious and academic contributions across generations.
His father, Maulvi Hakeem Abdul Haq, was known as a distinguished Islamic scholar and debater. His grandfather, Sheikh-ul-Hadith Mufti Shahzada, was a graduate of Darul Uloom Deoband and a prominent jurist of his time. His great-grandfather, Sheikh Maulana Muhammad Ismail, was also counted among the leading scholars of his era and had taught prominent figures such as Allama Shams-ul-Haq Afghani.
Educational journey:
Maulana Muhammad Idris received his early education at home. After matriculation, he began his formal religious studies at Darul Uloom Numania, Utmanzai.
For higher religious education, he joined the renowned institution Darul Uloom Haqqania, Akora Khattak, where he benefited from prominent scholars such as Sheikh-ul-Hadith Maulana Abdul Haq Akorvi and Mufti Muhammad Fared.

Later, he earned an MA in Arabic and Islamic Studies from the University of Peshawar with distinction, reflecting both his scholarly depth and his engagement with modern education.
Teaching services:
In 1983, he began his teaching career at Jamia Numania and devoted nearly 40 years of his life to teaching. For the past 30 years, he continuously taught major Hadith texts such as Sahih al-Bukhari and Jami al-Tirmidhi.
His teaching scope was extensive, and at one point he was instructing around 2,400 students in Hadith, a clear testament to his scholarly stature.
His two sons are also following in his footsteps: Maulana Anis Ahmed is engaged in teaching, while Dr. Muhammad Salman is serving in the medical field.
Political and public role:
Maulana Muhammad Idris was not limited to the academic sphere; he also played an active role in politics and public life. He served as the district amir and provincial senior leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam. He was also elected as a member of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.
In 2004, he presented the Sharia Bill in the provincial assembly, which is considered one of the most significant and memorable achievements of his political career.
Martyrdom and public reaction:
This morning, unknown armed men opened fire on him in Charsadda, resulting in his martyrdom. The news spread rapidly, triggering waves of grief and anger across the area. Protests have also begun in several locations.
His funeral prayer will be offered today at 5 PM in his native area, Trangaizai, Charsadda. His demise has created a scholarly and political void that is expected to remain unfilled for a long time.
