The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has issued an alert to the deputy commissioners of Upper and Lower Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir, Swat, Upper and Lower Kohistan, and Mansehra over the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) and flash floods.

According to the PDMA, rising temperatures and recent rainfall have accelerated the melting of glaciers and snow in northern districts, increasing water flows and raising the likelihood of GLOF incidents and flash flooding.

The authority warned that glacial lake outbursts, landslides, rockfalls, mudslides, and disruptions to road networks could occur in the snow-covered valleys of Swat, Chitral, Kohistan, Dir, and Mansehra.

PDMA said sudden surges in rivers and streams may trigger flooding in low-lying areas and directed local administrations to closely monitor vulnerable locations.

The district administrations have been instructed to ensure timely warnings in high-risk areas, conduct evacuation drills, and arrange the provision of essential supplies at safe locations.

Authorities have also been directed to activate community alert systems, keep residents of vulnerable areas informed, and maintain close coordination with local disaster management committees.

The PDMA advised the public to avoid visiting riverbanks, seasonal streams, and areas with strong water currents during the ongoing heatwave.

Tourists and travelers have also been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise caution while visiting sensitive areas.

Rescue 1122, the Communication and Works (C&W) Department, the National Highway Authority (NHA), and other relevant agencies have been directed to remain on high alert and pre-position machinery and personnel to respond to any emergency.

The PDMA spokesperson said the authority's Emergency Operations Centre is fully operational, and citizens can report any emergency by calling 1700.
