In a remarkable display of quick thinking and bravery, a shepherd in Ghizer saved the lives of hundreds when he alerted villagers about the imminent collapse of a glacier, sparking a swift evacuation.

The disaster unfolded when a glacier burst and triggered a massive landslide, which led to a flood that partially blocked the flow of the Ghizer River. As the water began to rise, panic spread throughout the region. 

However, a local shepherd, Ansar, became the unsung hero of the day. With his deep knowledge of the terrain and his awareness of the signs of danger, Ansar immediately contacted villagers by phone, warning them about the impending flood.

Thanks to his timely warning, the village of Tali Das was evacuated overnight, and nearly 200 villagers sought refuge at a higher-altitude location. Ansar's efforts ensured that over 100 homes were vacated in time, though many were later damaged by the floodwaters. Despite the destruction of property, precious lives were spared, thanks to his courage and quick action.

At the time of the flood, Ansar was with his family of six, taking shelter at the same stream, but he ensured that the villagers were informed first. As a result of his timely action, the Pakistan Army and other rescue agencies were able to initiate a swift evacuation, relocating the 200 villagers to safer areas, including Yangal and Small villages.

According to Deputy Commissioner Ghizer, Habib Ur Rehman, the Pakistan Army successfully rescued Ansar and his family of six from the Roshin Nala where they had been trapped, bringing them to safety at a secure location.

The flood caused significant damage, with a 7-kilometer area transformed into an artificial lake, and approximately one kilometer of road swept away by the raging waters. 

Despite the scale of the destruction, the story of Ansar’s heroism stands as a testament to the power of community, courage, and timely action in the face of nature's fury.
