At least eight local volunteers were killed and several others are feared trapped after a massive landslide struck the Danyor Nullah in Gilgit.

Police sources told a private TV channel that the volunteers were working to repair and restore a flood-affected water channel when a large mound of earth suddenly collapsed, burying multiple people under the debris.

According to hospital sources, all the deceased were members of a local volunteer team, while three injured individuals are receiving medical treatment.

Rescue operations are underway to locate more victims, with local residents actively participating in the relief efforts. The district administration has declared an emergency in the affected hospitals.

A spokesperson for the Gilgit-Baltistan government said that the region is witnessing intensified impacts of climate change, with melting glaciers increasing water flow in various streams.

This has led to flooding in the Shishper Nullah, causing significant damage to farmland, orchards, and trees in nearby settlements. A section of the Karakoram Highway has also been damaged, prompting the closure of the Hunza route once again.

Due to erosion along the highway, traffic to Hunza is being diverted via the Nagar Road. Authorities have also advised residents to remain cautious amid forecasts of further rain and potential landslides.
