A boy and a girl were killed in Khyber district’s Tirah Valley in what local sources described as an “honor” killing after relatives accused them of being involved in obscene videos.
According to locals, a day before the killing, the Bar Qamber Khel tribal jirga (national council) took action after alleged obscene videos and immoral audio clips of the victims went viral on social media. The jirga reportedly ordered the burning of the victims’ houses.
Two months ago, when the videos first surfaced, the jirga declared them against tribal values and traditions. Tribal elders Haji Zahir Shah Afridi and Kamaluddin said the torching of the houses was not carried out under any legal or religious framework but in line with longstanding Afridi tribal customs. They argued that those who bring disrepute to the area deserve such punishment.
Local sources further said that following the circulation of the videos, two other young men from the area went missing. The jirga’s decision has received support from some tribal and social circles, who have defended it as being consistent with traditional practices.
However, when TNN repeatedly tried to contact the Station House Officer (SHO) of Tirah police station regarding the incident, no response was received.
