Inamullah Khan, chairman of the Marwat-Bettani Qaumi Tehreek, set off for Bannu on Monday along with armed supporters, demanding the release of water from Baran Dam into the Marwat Canal. Local police officials attempted to negotiate with him prior to his departure, but their efforts failed.
According to police sources, DSP Lakki Marwat tried to dissuade Inamullah Khan from moving toward Bannu, but talks proved unsuccessful, and Khan proceeded with his armed convoy.
Inamullah Khan has long been advocating for water rights from Baran Dam and has staged multiple protests in recent months. Tensions had earlier flared between Bannu tribes and Marwat-Bettani tribes over the issue, though the situation had since returned to normal.
Two weeks ago, Khan publicly announced his intention to go to Bannu on July 15. Just two days ago, he survived an IED attack believed to be linked to the dispute, which claimed the life of his companion Irfanullah.
In response to the latest developments, the District Police Officer (DPO) Bannu stated that no one would be allowed to challenge the writ of the state. He said no armed group would be permitted to enter Bannu, and any such individuals would be arrested immediately.
